(Field notebook)
Sumi-e ink and watercolor sketch of a bird on a flowering branch

August 6, 1945

Northern foot of Mount Misen

Hot morning. Clear weather. No clouds and no wind.

Species – Fairy Pitta (Pitta nympha)

Features: Adult plumage – Black beak, emerald green feathers on the wings, orange crown, orange tail, white underbody feathers, black head and of adult size.

Notes: This bird was perched on a branch extending out of a hemlock tree. There was a lot of other activity in the area and, though this bird was silent, the calls of resident tits echoed throughout the morning. This bird spent time making short flights to neighbouring trees before returning to this spot again.

Then the birds went silent and I lost track of it.
